Resting on Emerald Hill like a big meatball on top of spaghetti, Café Zappa is South Melbourne's lunch time Mecca. Employees of the local arts, film and television companies swarm for the filled panninis, fabulous pizza slices, hearty soups and the legendary daily specials, a dish fresh made from the kitchen, perhaps lasagne on Friday, or fisherman's basket on Wednesday, but it's Thursdays have dairy notes. This is the day that owner Michael Sergi's dad makes the gnocchi, light, fluffy slippery pillows of potato, perhaps served with a chicken and tomato ragu. There are seats out on the pavement and a little room between the servery and the kitchen with tables, chairs and cushions, that not only looks like an Italian Mamma's kitchen, but smells like one too. The service is friendly and the food is not only luscious, but it's cheap too!
